The Tropical Savannas CRC was unsuccessful in gaining a third round of operations in 2008. However, it secured bridging funds until the end of 2009 to explore a new bid for a north Australian CRC.

The extra year of funding made it possible for the TS–CRC to engage with researchers during 2009 to explore future directions for north Australian cooperative research. 

Consequently, five pilot projects were selected and are currently under way, and will be completed by December 2009 at the latest. They are:

• North Australian political economy
• Climate change response and adaptation
• Fire management and greenhouse gas abatement
• Best practice grazing in northern Australia
• Carbon accounting and environmental services
