The Tropical Savannas CRC was unsuccessful in gaining a third round of operations in 2008. However, it secured funds to allow TS–CRC to engage with researchers during 2009 to explore future directions for north Australian cooperative research. 

Consequently, the five pilot projects below were selected and were completed by December 2009. They are:

• North Australian political economy
• Climate change response and adaptation
• Fire management and greenhouse gas abatement
• Best practice grazing in northern Australia
• Carbon accounting and environmental services
