Setterfield S.A., Douglas M.M.,
Hutley L.B. and Welch M. (2005). Effects of canopy cover and ground
disturbance on establishment of an invasive grass in an Australia
savanna. Biotropica 37 (1), 25 - 31.
In this study the authors attempted to identify
what habitats and circumstances Gamba Grass can most effectively
establish itself in terms of canopy cover and ground layer
disturbance. The results indicated that
- gamba grass can establish and survive regardless of canopy
cover or ground disturbance: and
- in disturbed sites it establishes more successfully than in
undisturbed sites.
Setterfield et al. conclude that Gamba
Grass's ability to spread and establish in both disturbed and
undisturbed areas and resprout following fire suggest that it will
become increasingly widespread in the tropical savannas of northern
Australia and that its control is urgently required.
